Kūwāha’ilo returns to expound upon the ideas broached by Creation Chant and brings unexpected, yet brilliant new sonic explorations that lend further captivating yet virulent energy to an already massive, triumphant sound.
While between Pahu O ka Ua (LP1) and Creation Chant (LP2), Kū kept busy with splits, an EP, and a demo, the span between Creation Chant and Aia I Ka ‘Ōpua Ke Ola has been quiet. After spending time with Aia I Ka ‘Ōpua Ke Ola, it would seem that he was further honing his might and exploring novel ways of aurally manifesting his vitriol. The production this time is cleaner, but not in a way that strips it of any ounce of ferocity. No. In a way that only accentuates the vehement ancestral fortitude and lamentation inherent in Kū’s aspiration behind this project. While the backbone of Ildjarn-style blackened punk remains, the exploration of the classic Russian and Polish-style hypnotic, dense wall-of-sound approach reaches new hei
ghts. Furthermore, the accentuation of the low range is more fully realized on this recording, though the bass melodies and low, guttural vocal performance contrast perfectly with the blistering, radiant highs of the riffs and guitar work, further elevating this approach. Adding to the power of this distinct approach, we find Kū also exploring more dynamic and varied tempos and instrumentation, only adding to the vigor of Aia I Ka ‘Ōpua Ke Ola. Since 2019’s self-titled demo, Kūka’ilimoku have consistently released some of the most brutal blackened punk, and in recent years they have continued to expound on their approach, further setting themselves apart and honing their spear of disgust and hatred to a fine razor’s edge."
