Modern Cult Classic of Melodic/Symphonic Raw Black Metal gets a much-needed Reissue
Initially released in 2020, Deogen explored territory that seemed both nostalgic and novel simultaneously. While The Endless Black Shadows of Abyss is a very raw specimen of black metal, the focus on epic melodicism and atmosphere was something that Raw Black Metal was, at the time, shying away from slightly. The riffs are present and bountiful, the drums are driving, dynamic, and relentless, the vocals move between sharp rasps and bewitching low register beconings, and the symphonic elements provide a distinctive backbone. However, one of the most compelling elements is that the production provides the perfect balance of the crude and coarse elements that make raw BM so appealing, with the cleaner tones of the synth and melodic undertones, which are even allowed to the forefront at times. Thus giving this album a unique sound for the time period. Where many of its contemporaries were drowning in the wall of feedback, leaving only lingering tonal shifts, Deogen leaned into the drama inherent in black metal and the melancholy that is essential to an authentic, memorable experience in this genre. Listening to this album today, the aural experience is timeless, and a sincere standout release. While shorter in duration, it’s impossible to convey the understated superiority of this release fully. It clashed raw riffing, with ariose symphonic elements to create a perennial example of the potential of the genre. Not to be missed a second time.
